What did our ancestors who lived in pile dwellings eat?

No supermarkets, no tomatoes, no chocolate – and yet the diet of the pile-dwelling people was anything but meagre. Thanks to thousands of years of preservation in the peat bogs of Alpine lakes, archaeologists have uncovered a wealth of information about food, health and daily life in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.

PalaFitFood is the book that transforms 150 years of scientific research into a culinary journey through the seasons: meat stews with wild root vegetables, tangy cheeses, crickets with pea purée, and yes – even a ‘Pala…fitta pizza’.

The original German-language version (here the link) was published in 2021 on the Palafitfood blog, created by German archaeologists to mark the tenth anniversary of the "Prehistoric pile dwellings aroundf the Alps" being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List..

Thanks to a grant from the Lombardy Region, awarded to the Municipality of Desenzano del Garda and the Valle Sabbia Archaeological Museum in Gavardo to mark Italy’s chairmanship of the transnational UNESCO serial site ‘Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps’ for the two-year period 2025–26, the book is now available in Italian and can be downloaded via open access.

The Italian edition features an introduction for Italian readers and a special recipe inspired by the finds made during the excavations at the Lucone di Polpenazze pile-dwelling site.
